My best friend keeps talking about her “guides.” She seems to really believe in them and now she’s begun to deliver messages from them to me! I’m not sure about any of this, especially since the advice her guides give me isn’t something I feel good about following. Do we each have a guide? If so, how do I find mine? Why were my friend’s guides so off in their advice to me? Signed, Needs a Guide Dear Asrianna, For as long as I can remember, I’ve absolutely loved angels! I collect them constantly and they decorate my house. I even have them as pictures and little figurines in my office. But though I have faith and believe my angels are around me, I get discouraged because I can’t actually see or hear or feel their presence. Am I doing something wrong? Signed, Loves Angels Dear Needs and Love, For many of us, wanting to know and feel closer to the loving energies surrounding us is a strong emotional and spiritual need. The wonderful news is that we each have many positive energetic beings whose work and joy it is to help guide us. They seek to comfort and support us in ways both large and small. No request is too insignificant for our spiritual support team! So who or what are guides? They’re energetic beings who accompany us as we navigate the joys and challenges of living in an earthly body. They may appear—as it was for me in my Cherokee family—as animal Totems, plant spirits, winged ones, finned ones or the crawling ones. Whether they’re your lifetime Totem or the porcupine crossing your path at a pivotal time, these loving beings arrive to impart strength, urge caution or provide lessons before disappearing. They work with you to provide wisdom and comfort. There are entire books written on the subject of guides and it seems the most popular regard angels, and spirits of the deceased. Angels are mentioned in various sacred texts. While there are differences of hierarchy and assigned angelic tasks among the angels themselves, with very few exceptions it’s agreed upon that angels have never been in human form. They were created by God to be of service to God and humankind. (Please substitute the Divine name that best fits your concept of a loving Deity.) These angels interact with, assist, and comfort us and we can ask for their presence, strength, love and guidance in any situation. Another area of current interest is that of contacting the deceased. Invoking ancestors and other loved ones through prayer, ritual and ceremony has been part of various cultures throughout humankind’s history. As a Spiritual Medium I’ve had the honor of connecting many people with their loved ones in spirit. I’ve heard numerous people refer to their departed loved ones as “Guardian Angels,” however angels and the deceased are distinct and separate energies. A precious loved one, however, continues to cherish and care for you and they can—and do—help us in many ways from the spirit world. There are other spiritual energies around us such as elementals, ascended Masters, Avatars, and others, but the ones I’ve given examples of here are the spiritual beings most often thought of and spoken about when I’m approached on this subject. No discussion of spirit guidance can start without a brief mention regarding free will. Many times I’m approached with requests to contact guides who are then expected to provide information on what’s going to happen days, weeks, months or years from now. Regardless of what another may say, the future isn’t written in stone and while we may not appear to have a conscious say in every event occurring in our life, nonetheless we have the free will necessary to choose our responses. When it comes to our guides, they will not—with very few exceptions—interfere in our lives in any way without being asked. And far from being approached too frequently (which can never be the case), our guides speak most often of having to stand by helplessly as we experience life without their loving help and intercession. Make sure to ask for their guidance, love and support continuously and remember they won’t intervene without our invitation. So ask! Personal free will is one of the reasons I advise you to use your fullest discernment when other people approach you to offer unasked-for advice from their spiritual guides. While it’s not unusual for requested spiritual help and direction to arrive in various ways—from a book opened to a pertinent passage to a song whose chorus sings just what we need to hear—there’s need for thoughtful consideration when unrequested information comes from someone else’s guide. Remember that Divine guidance will always be positive, empowering, loving and resonate somewhere deeply within you as being true and for your highest good. Ask yourself some questions. Did you actually pray for that insight, information or specific guidance? While there are many ways to approach the Divine for help, if you haven’t an awareness of requesting the offered information, or if it seems harsh, unloving or unbeneficial, be cautious. Seek clarification, validation and confirmation from your own divinely sent guides. Although I’ve taught entire classes on how to meet guides, here are a few simple steps to help you access their divine help and wisdom. First, decide upon a safe, secure, calm environment in which you can relax and be open to communication. Put a do-not-disturb sign on the door, silence your phone, and take the necessary steps to assure your solitude. You can play soft music, set out a vase of flowers, burn pleasing incense, or have a candle burning (be safe!). Next, invoke protection. Whenever we open ourselves up to the spiritual realm it’s wise to ask to be filled with, and surrounded by, pure white light. I refer to it as a bright, golden white light though you can envision it as a radiance that resonates with you. Request that you only be in contact with loving energies of the highest vibration and divine light, with your highest good as their greatest concern. Then simply ask. Ask to meet the guide for whom your well-being and happiness is their highest priority. Ask what your guide looks like, their name, or how you’re to recognize their presence in your life. Be patient, it’s not always necessary to have a visual picture of them or even know their name right away. If you’ve a specific need, ask your guides to help you with your problem or challenge. Be open and receptive. You may see images. For instance, angels often arrive as beautiful, radiant lights, in white or even dazzling colors such as violet or blue, soft shades of emerald or pink. Pictures or images might appear via your spiritual third eye or even your temporal gaze. Perhaps you’ll hear their verbal guidance. It may sound like your own inner voice or perhaps as spoken words coming from an outside source. Pay attention to your emotions. An answer may come as a feeling, a sense of an a-ha! moment, a felt rightness, an emotional pull toward—or resistance to—a particular choice. Guidance can emerge as a strong knowing, appearing in your mind as thoughts coming to you in part or as a whole. Ask for, and use, your discernment. Before accepting a guide or acting upon the provided guidance, be discriminating. Not harshly judging or discounting the information you’ve received, but testing it against your inner compass. Remember, even if you’ve asked for help regarding a troubling or painful situation in your life, true Divine guidance and direction will always be kind, loving, patient and beneficial and will resonate and feel authentic to your deepest, highest self. Once you’ve accepted the information as coming from a higher source and believe in its authenticity, then act responsibly on that loving guidance. Make note of the results and consequences. The more you implement the guidance you receive, the more often you put it into practice in your life, the more opportunities you’ll have for seeing the benefit of their counsel. This, more than anything else, provides the strong foundation for knowing, feeling and trusting your guides. Be patient and kind to yourself and leave negative self-judgment behind. Every person connects with their guides at their own best pace and time. Learning to communicate with them is an exciting journey. Enjoy! Signed, Asrianna
